          was held at the McInnis Hall,Dalhousie
          University Student Union Bldg.,December
          28,1968.
        
         Congratulatory Cablegrams were received
         and read by Dr. Jacobo R. Asuncion,Jr.
         prior to the program before a huge          
         audience:

              Philippine Consulate General,
              Vancouver,Canada ;


              General Carlos P. Romulo,
              Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affaires,
              &Permanent Representative to the
              United Nations, and ;

              the Philippines.

   *  After the presentation of the well received
     Program, all the Elected Officers( Executive
     Council ) presented and performed the
     Elegant Stately Dance: " REGODON DE
     HONOR ."


   *  Among the distinguished guests: Mayor
     of Halifax,Deputy Premier of Nova Scotia,
     Dr. Chester Stewart,Dean of Dalhousie
     Faculty of Medicine, Dr.Richard L. de CH.
     Saunders,Head of the Department of

   *  The  Dinner and Dance was fit for the 
     Royalty ! 
     The  Philippine Cuisine dinner with lechon, 
     and many other delicasies,and exotic 
     desserts was followed by a dance with gusto!
     Every  attendee danced.
      
    *  The McInnes Room of the Dal Student
        Union was the  BALLROOM .  It was
        decorated beautifully and was turned
        into a TROPICAL  PARADISE !

       This was compiled and published  by Miss
       Marissa R. Asuncion.

  •  The First Annual Picnic.
      This was held in Hubbards Beach in
      August 1968.  Everyone enjoyed   swim-
      ming.  To keep ourselves warm,we started
      a bonfire. With a good appetite,we finished
      all the food we brought. We had a hearty
      sing-a-long to the end.

  •  Philippine Independence Day: 
           We celebrated  the 71st anniversary at
      the Citadel Inn.  There was a prepared
      program and the Keynote speaker was
      Mr. Roy McCosh, the Regional Director
      of Canada Manpower and Immigration.
          ______________________________

  • Nova Scotia Festival of the Arts.
     The Association participated in this
     festival with two folk dance numbers,and
     two pieces of music played by our FANS
     BAND.  This was held in Acadia University,
     Wolfville,N.S. in May,1969.

  •  The Turning Over of Presidency is             .
            accompanied by the Traditional Turning
      over ceremony of the Presidential gavel
      of authority.  Initiated by Dr. J.R.Asuncion, 
      Jr. on June 12, 1968.

         Asuncion,Jr.'s Administration:


    •     The  Very First Formal Meeting of the  
             Society:

             The Recording and Corresponding Secre-
             tary Pro-tempore, Miss Ma.Luisa(Marissa)
             Rosales Asuncion, the younger sister of
             the President notified by phone all the
             Filipinos living in Halifax, Dartmouth,and 
             vicinity to attend an important meeting
             called on behalf of the President.

             
             The meeting was called to order by the
             President Pro-tempore, Dr . Jacobo
             Rosales Asuncion,Jr. at 7:00 pm. A.S.T.          May 20,1968 at the residence of Miss Lina
             Beltran, and Miss Toni Jurado at
             Brenton Street, Halifax,N.S.
             Halifax.


             The following agenda were  adopted:
             
             1.  Call the meeting to order.
             2.  The organization of the society.
             3.  The celebration of the Philippine
                   Independence Day,June 12.
             4.  Appointment of the Chairs of the
                  Committees for both No.2 and No.3.
             5.  Schedule the Board of Directors Meeting
                  A.S.A.P.
             6.  Other business.
             7.  Adjournment.
        
            Because of time constraint,namely June 12
            was fast approaching, the meeting decided
            to celebrate the Philippine Independence 

            first,and organize the society at a later 
            date.

    •   The First Philippine Independence   
           celebration

           was held  at the Flamingo Restaurant , 
           Lounge, Bar & Grill ,Bayer's Road Shopping 
           Center in Halifax,N.S. on June 12,1968.




            Mary Barker of the Mail-Star wrote:" As
            Marco Polo was treated by Kubla khan,so
            with the guests of the the Filipino Asso-
            ciation of Nova Scotia,who feasted and 

            were entertained in Halifax in celebration of
            Philippine Independence Day. The natio-
            nalistic main address: "The Struggle for
            Philippine Independence" was delivered
            by Dr. J.R.Asuncion,Jr.  Dr. Asuncion 
            concluded his address with the following   

            remarks: Because of the sacrifices of our   
            heroes,we are now enjoying freedom!  And 
            now in Canada, we are the proud Special
            Ambassadors of our country---
                   The Philippines !

            And should act that way in Canada,
            in whatever we say,do or think !
            Thank you .

    1969-1970 2nd President Miss Rosalinda Almaria ,R.N.

                                                               



    •  The Highlights of Main Events and  achievements of Miss Rosalinda Almaria's administration:        
    Participation in Halifax  Natal Day Parade :            Miss Linda Almaria was  on board one decorated convertible marked "Miss  Luzon",while two other beautiful Filipina Ladies were on board the two decorated convertibles marked  "Miss Visayas ,and  "Miss Mindanao".  August,1969                           ........                                                                Annual Christmas Celebration:

      This was held at Dalhousie Student Union Building.  A lively program and party was supervised by Miss Linda Almaria.  December,1969.

           Membership to the United Council of Filipino Associations in Canada :  Dr. J.R.Asuncion, Jr.     
    presented a resolution that the F.A.N.S. be a member of the U.C.F.A.C.  The membership was approved in principle.

           Philippine Independence Day:


    The 72nd Anniversary of the Philippine Independence was commemorated, and was held at the Citadel Inn. A prepared program  and party followed.  June 14,1970.

    1970-1971 3rd President Engr. Marc Guzman ,B.Sc.Eng.

                              


    Highlights  of  Main  Event  and Accomplishments of Eng. Marc  Guzman's  administration :
        
    • Sports Activities:
    •  Sport activities increased. Eng. Guzman
         promoted interest in tennis, golf and bowling.

    •  Financial Status: 
    •  Miss Claudia Ocampo,the treasurer improved the  financial  status of the association through intense collection of membership fees and private donations .
    • Excursion :
    • The association had an exciting excursion to the beautiful  Prince Edward Island.   We  drove our cars to the Ferry Boat, and drove them out to the beach upon arrival. We went swimming at Summer Side,PEI.  Of course we feasted on lobsters!  Eat as much as you like... but PYO !   We had a memorable time.
    •  
    • Christmas  Party: The Christmas party was held in our residence at 46 Inverness Avenue,Halifax.   We  had caroling,and  enjoyed the Christmas Diner with an excellent varieties of delicious cuisines. Imagine the whole association occupied all the rooms in the two floors.  Snow storm came and all our guests were snowed in!

    • Constitution and By-Laws:
    • The CBL of the FANS had its first major revision in 1970. Chairperson:  Dr.Jacobo R. Asuncion,Jr.

    •  The Highlights of the Main Events and Achievements of Mrs. Erlinda Y. Obellos Asuncion's Administration:

    • The "F.A.N.S. Newsletter was published for the first time.  Eng. Marc Guzman was the first Editor-in-Chief.

    • The "Hermano-Hermana" System was organized and proposed by Dr. J. R. Asuncion, Jr. The system consisted essentially of a rotating sponsorship of social functions. It was arranged and financed by the group " on deck". The Society was divided into five groups.

    • Christmas Celebration:
    • This was held at the Hotel Nova Scotian.  We had a Dinner & Dance . For Dinner,the choice was salmon or chicken. Food- excellent. The choice of DJ was a good one.  We all enjoyed dancing! December 24,1971.

    • Independence Celebration:
    • The 1972 Philippine Independence Celebration was held at the Flamingo Restaurant & Lounge. We had Buffet Diner and dance presentations. June 12,1972.

    • U.C.F.A.C. National Conference:
    • The National Conference of the United Council of Filipino Associations in Canada was held in Toronto,Ontario. Dr. J. R. Asuncion,Jr. was elected as   The Delegate  to the U.C.F.A.C.   Dr. Asuncion  paid for all the expenses.  These were the days !
    • July 6,7,8 ,1972.

    1972-1973 5th President Dr.Emmanuel B. Aquino ,M.D.

                                     

    • The Highlights of the Main Events and Accomplishments of the Dr.Emmanuel B. Aquino's  Administration:
    •  
    • The "F.A.N.S. MAIL", the official newsletter of the association was published with Mr. V. Pimentel as the Editor-in-chief.
    •  
    • A Referendum for the adoption of the Proposed 1973 Major Revision of the F.A.N.S. Constitution and By-Laws:   Dr. Jacobo R. Asuncion,Jr., the Chair of the By-Laws Committee  circulated the proposal by mail. The Result:  the Return Cards had 100%  compliance. And so, the Major Revision was adopted by a unanimous vote !

    • Annual Picnic:
    • The picnic was held in Owen's Park,Lunenburg,N.S.  We had BBQ, Then   we went swimming.  We visited the boat-building site,and the Fisherman's Museum.

    • The "Bayanihan" System of mutual assistanship was organized by Dr. J. R. Asuncion,Jr. It was practiced  effectively through the Bayanihan Standing Committee,where Eng, Eddie Guinto was the  Chair . Should you be moving your household-across the street or across the province... all you need is to make one phone call. And help is available.  Available for members only.

    • The Incorporation:     The Filipino Association of Nova Scotia was incorporated as a SOCIETY  ,under  the SOCIETY 'S ACT of the REVISED  STATUTE OF NOVA SCOTIA, on June 10,1974. (Dr. Jacobo R. Asuncion,Jr. and  Dr.Gregorio L. Sayat).

    • The First Federal Grant:     The Society received its first Federal Grant from the Minister of State Responsible for Multiculturalism. Amount  $5,000.00.  This grant supported the Project: "Filipino Music Revival".  Project Director : Dr. Jacobo R. Asuncion,Jr

    • The "F.A.N.S. MAIL" at the peak of its   productivity :      Mrs. Gloria B. Sangalang, the Editor-in-Chief published six (6) issues of the newsletter(1973-1974).
    •  
    •  F.A.N.S.- Official Member of the U.C.F.A.C. :    The FANS became an official member of the United Council of Filipino Associations in Canada. Dr.Bayani Ignacio was the FANS Delegate to the UCFAC National Conference in Ottawa.  September,1973. 
    •  
    • 1973 Recipients of the U.C.F.A.C. Awards :
    • Dr.Bayani Ignacio...Most Outstanding Filipino in Canada Award, Ottawa,Ontario,September 1st,1973.
    • Dr.Jacobo R. Asuncion,Jr....Certificate of Distinguished Service Award,Ottawa,Ontario,September,1973.

    • 1774 Recipient of the U.C.F.A.C. Award : 
    • Dr.Jacobo R. Asuncion,Jr....Most Outstanding Filipino in Canada Award, Calgary,Alberta,July 14,1974.
    • Delegate to the UCFAC National Conference in Calgary,Alberta, July 14,1974.

    • Halifax Natal Day Parade:     The FANS  had a  civic participation in the form of a float. Themes: " Towards Multiculturalism"  and  "Happy Birthday Halifax ".                                 "Miss Philippines-Nova Scotia" and escorts were on board the float decorated with exotic tropical plants.
    •  
    • Participation in Conferences:
    •     (a) United Council of Christians and jews Conference:      Dr. J.R. Asuncion,Jr.,FANS  Delegate to the UCCJ Conference  in Lord Nelson Hotel,Halifax, May,1974.
    •     (b) Indo-Canadian Annual Conference:    Dr.J.R.Asuncion,Jr.,FANS Delegate to the ICAC,Holiday Inn, October,1974.
    •  
    • Radio Programmes:      The FANS participated in the monthly Multicultural Radio Programmes.   Mrs. Gloria Sangalang,Halifax,N.S. ,1973.
    •  
    • The "Filipino Night" Celebration:      The venue was the Baronet Room,Chateau Halifax. Dr. J. R. Asuncion,Jr. talked about: "Prime Minister Trudeau and Multiculturalism",then introduced the Guest Speaker:  Senator Dr. Henry Hicks( Standing for the Federal Minister Responsible for Multiculturalism). Senator Hicks talked about "Multiculturalism in Canada".
    •  
    • Annual Picnic at the Laurie Park.      The Provincial Park has a Lifeguard at the beach so the children had fun.  The adults played volley ball, then went swimming.  Of course the picnic is always the acme of the fun !
    •  
    • Three(3) Major Revisions :       The Original  Constitution and By-Laws of the Filipino Association of Nova Scotia  underwent three(3) Major Revisions in 1970 ,1973 ,and 1974.    Dr. Jacobo R. Asuncion,Jr. was the Chairperson in all these revisions.
    •  
    • The Memorandum of Association:      As a prerequisite a legal advice is a must.  The Society's Lawyer and Dr. J. R. Asuncion,Jr. had a conference. A review of the document showed that only a few minor amendments were necessary,and after the payment of the required fee ,our Society became incorporated under  the SOCIETY'S ACT,REVISED STATUTE OF NOVA SCOTIA.
